A burst pipe is a plumbing emergency that requires immediate action. Water can quickly spread through your home, potentially damaging drywall, flooring, cabinets, furniture, electrical components, and other property. The faster you stop the water and get professional help, the better your chances of limiting the damage. If a pipe bursts in your Phoenix, Arizona home, here's what you should do.
1. Shut Off the Water Immediately Your first priority is to stop the flow of water. Locate your home's main water shut-off valve and turn it off. Knowing where your main shut-off is located before an emergency happens can save valuable time. If you have a smaller, isolated leak and know where the individual fixture shut-off is located, you may be able to shut off that supply while arranging for repairs. If the shut-off valve is damaged or you cannot safely operate it, contact the appropriate water utility or a plumbing professional for assistance. The City of Phoenix specifically advises homeowners not to attempt to turn off the water at the meter themselves if the service valve is not working. 2. Stay Away From Wet Electrical Areas Water and electricity are a dangerous combination. If water has reached electrical outlets, appliances, light fixtures, wiring, or an electrical panel, don't touch wet electrical equipment. If you can safely access the electrical panel without entering standing water or otherwise putting yourself at risk, shut off power to the affected area. If doing so isn't safe, stay away from the area and contact a qualified professional. 3. Relieve Pressure From the Plumbing System After the water supply has been shut off, opening faucets can help drain some of the remaining water from the plumbing system. Open faucets carefully and allow the water to drain. This can help reduce the amount of water remaining in the lines, but it does not replace professional repair of the damaged pipe. 4. Protect Your Belongings If it is safe to do so, move furniture, rugs, electronics, boxes, and other belongings away from the affected area. Use buckets, towels, or other materials to contain or collect water when practical. Don't put yourself in danger trying to save property. If the ceiling is bulging, water is near electrical equipment, or the area appears structurally unsafe, leave the area and get professional assistance. 5. Call a Phoenix Plumber Once the water has been shut off and the immediate danger is under control, contact Qualtire Plumbing & Construction. We can locate the damaged section, determine why the pipe failed, and make the appropriate repair or replacement. It's important to determine why the pipe failed—not simply replace the visibly damaged section. For example, excessive water pressure, aging plumbing, corrosion, or deteriorating materials may indicate that other portions of the system should also be inspected. 6. Document the Damage Once the situation is safe, take photographs and videos of the affected areas. Document:
7. Address the Water Damage Repairing the pipe is only part of the process. Water that gets into drywall, flooring, insulation, cabinets, or other building materials may require additional attention. Depending on the amount of water and the affected materials, drying, cleanup, or restoration services may be necessary. The sooner affected areas are properly dried and evaluated, the better. What NOT to Do When a Pipe Bursts A plumbing emergency can be stressful, but avoid taking unnecessary risks. Don't:
Why Did the Pipe Burst? Once the immediate emergency is under control, it's important to determine what caused the failure. Common causes can include: High Water Pressure - Excessive water pressure can place stress on plumbing pipes, fittings, fixtures, and appliances. The City of Phoenix identifies pressure above 80 PSI as a condition that requires homeowner action because it can damage pipes and appliances. Aging Plumbing - Older pipes and fittings can deteriorate over time and eventually develop leaks or fail. Corrosion and Mineral Buildup - Mineral deposits and corrosion can weaken plumbing components and contribute to leaks. Damaged Connections - Joints, valves, fittings, and supply lines can become weak points in a plumbing system. Freezing Temperatures - Although freezing conditions are uncommon in Phoenix compared with colder climates, occasional cold weather can still create problems for vulnerable plumbing. Understanding the cause can help determine whether you need a simple repair or whether other portions of your plumbing system should be inspected. How to Prepare for a Plumbing Emergency One of the best things homeowners can do is prepare before a pipe ever bursts. Know where your:
